In response to the post on Crafty winning only 7 out of 18 games and playing a second tier game, and it falling back: I have one thing to conclude: Hardware specific problem. Here's why:
I've been playing Crafty 17.6 (running on Athlon 700MHZ) against many of the programs mentioned, and boy, does it kick butt...7 out 18?! Not the Crafty I know...It is the strongest and fastest chess program on average I've played so far...I'm truly surprised that hardware can make such a dramatic performance difference. I challenge anyone to compete against it with any of the engines to prove my point...Hardware makes a difference!
