Analyze Mode

I'd like to know, what should be expected from Analyze mode under
Winboard. Should the engine analyze the position when it is still
in book, or should it just show a book move in response? Or should
it even select a book move and analyze the position after that?
Similar: When there is a forced move, my engine won't think, but
rather do the move. Should it analyze the position after the
forced move?

My preferences would be:
(1) The engine should analyze the position even when in book. Sometimes I would like to know what would happen if I deviated from book.
(2) The engine should always analyze the actual position. When there is only one move, its task is easier, that's all. If I want to analyze the position after that move, I simply make it.

Thanks for your answer. I followed your suggestions, which seem sensible.
I have a two other questions. The following is from Tim Mann's description
of Analyze mode:
|If the user selects "Periodic Updates", xboard will send the string ".\n" to
|the chess engine periodically during analyze mode, unless the last PV received
|began with a '(' character.
What does Winboard expect after a '(' character?
Also, I don't seem to get even one single ".\n" in Analyze mode. I have selected
Periodic Updates. Needless to say, that the Nodes and the NPS only get updated when
a new PV is sent.
When I try Crafty with the same setup, it can be seen from winboard.debug,
that it receives the ".\n". I have no idea, why crafty gets this and Yace doesn't.

Dieter

Sorry for the followup to my own message.

Periodic Updates. Needless to say, that the Nodes and the NPS only get updated when
a new PV is sent.
I solved this. Yace posted the material balance at the end of the PV in
parentheses:
e2e4 e7e5 Ng1f3 (0)
or
e2e4 d7d5 e4xd5 (100)
Winboard doesn't like the "(number)" in Analyze mode. No problems anymore, when
Yace doesn't post this. (I found the material balance somewhat informative, so now I have to figure it out myself ...)

Maybe you could change to using [number] instead?

Thanks Tim, that works. I should have thought of that myself :-(
