Many of you have already been collecting from my PGN collection at:

for quite some time. Let's call that collection Crapbase 1.0. It never had a name, but I think that one is as good as any. Since the games are gathered from public sources, the headers are frequently misspelled, and they have many other oddities like that. That collection contained a measly 1.3 million games. The new collection contains 2.3 million.
The games are all reliable PGN and have passed through several different PGN reading utilities to ensure that the contents are readable and accurate.
I certainly would not recommend merging this stuff in with a good commercial collection. But for those rare games you have been missing, or to see what people or machines might do for a particular opening, you might have a look-see. Mabye you are a poor college student and can't pay the cost of a real chess database like Chess Assistant or the like. Well, at least you can get a *large* game collection for nothing. (Surely, size is its best attribute).
Also found at my ftp site are chess playing programs, chess position solver programs, CAP data, and many other interesting chess artifacts.

Derek Adair, Peter Herttrich, and especially Michel Langeveld for helping to to collect the world's largest (and possibly crapiest) PGN collection. But it's better than a sharp stick in the eye.
I am also asking for something back. But that something would be fun if you would like to participate. Of course, you can still get all the stuff at my FTP site for free, but it would be *nice* if you would participate. I am organizing a large Winboard tournament. The games are farmed out in sets of 4. We are going to test about 50 Winboard engines with a very large round-robin tournament. Anyone who wants to can help. If you have two machines, you can play that way, or you can use FICS or ICC to pair against an opponent (as you choose). You can learn more about the tournament by going here:

And reading the banter about the "Battle of the Crowns" tournament. It won't start until April 1st, and I would appreciate any volunteers and/or input, suggestions, etc.
The games will be slow time control (probably game in one hour) so it would be a four hour commitment. Of course, since the games will be playing using Winboard, you won't really have to do anything except send in the PGN score when a game completes.

"Drecksbase 1.0" hatte bissher noch keinem Namen und nun heisst sie eben so. Da die Sammlung aus öffentlichen Quellen stammt, enthalten die Headerzeilen oft fehlerhafte Schreibweisen und es gibt viele andere Merkwürdigkeiten. Die alte Version umfasste bisher ungefähr 1,3 Millionen Partien, die neue 2,3 Milionen. Die Partien sind alle im PGN-Format und sind mit mehreren verschieden Instrumenten untersucht worden, um sicher zu stellen, dass der Inhalt lesbar ist.
Ich rate eher davon ab, die Daten mit denen einer kommerziellen Datenbank zu mischen. Aber, falls die eine oder andere Partie fehlt, oder um zu sehen, wie Spieler oder Programme in einer bestimmten Eröffnung spielen, kann man ja mal nachschauen.
Eventuell ist euch eine kommerzielle Datenbank wie Chess Assistant o. ä. zu teuer. Nun, ihr könnt hier eine zumindest *umfangreiche* Sammlung umsonst bekommen. (Zugegeben, der Umfang ist das herausragende Merkmal.) [Anmerkung von mir: ~480 MB gepackt, V.P.]
Auf meinem FTP-Server ist ausserdem viel anderes Schachmaterial wie Schachprogramme, Problemlöser, CAP-Daten usw. vorhanden.
Mein besonderer Dank gilt Derek Adair, Peter Herttrich und insbesondere Michel Langeveld für seine Unterstützung bei der Zusammenstellung der weltgroessten (und möglicherweise mistigsten) PGN-Sammlung. Aber das ist immer noch besser, als sich alles auf einen Zettel zu schreiben.
Ich bitte nun meinerseits um etwas. Es wird Spaß machen, wenn Du mitmachen würdest. Natürlich kannst Du auch weiterhin alles von meinem FTP-Server holen, aber es wäre *schön*, wenn Du mitmachst.
Ich organisiere ein grosses Winboard-Turnier. Es werden jeweils 4 Spiele ausgetragen. Es sollen dabei etwa 50 Winboardengines in einen sehr grossen Turnier (jeder gegen jeden) getestet werden. Jeder der will, kann mitmachen. Falls Du zwei Rechner hast, kannst Du damit spielen, oder Du kannst über FICS oder ICC gegen jemand anderes spielen (wie Du willst). I usually know just enough about the Babelfish translation to know that it is either howlingly funny or irritating to the intended audience. Usually, the audience can get the desired information with effort, but it is a lot better to have something "readable" for the audience to digest.
