I don't know of any freeware alternatives to WinBoard. The other alternative is demo versions of commercial programs, but their features are limited of course.

a very good program is chessvision. You can find a free demo version. Furthermore, the demo from Chess Academy !

Chessvision and Chessacademy are database programs. I seek a GUI without
a database, but first a demo is ok.
