How to take back a move?

Postby Dan-the-K » 18 Jul 2010, 17:37

Often, especially when I've made a really bad move, I'd like to take it back and try something better. Winboard lets you take back a move, or moves, but then you must redo the same move(s) in order to go forward.

Is there any way to do this?

The < and > buttons (or arrow keys) are only for looking through old game positions, not for taking moves back. For that there is a menu item, in the step menu.

Note that the engine must support the WB 'undo' command for this to work, and not all engines do.

Which are some engines that have this feature? Is there a list of WB engines with a column for this feature? (I'm trying to avoid going through them one-by-one).

Thanks,

Dan

All engines I've tried have this feature. :D What threw me off is that you must go past "backward" on the pull-down menu and rather, select "Retract Move."
