XBoard question

Postby Tuvoc » 22 Aug 2010, 16:41

I have XBoard 4.4.2 under Ubuntu, but I have not run it yet. In the windows environment my command line is something like:

winboard -ics -icshost 80.100.28.169 -icshelper timeseal -zp -fcp crafty-23.2-win64.exe -fd 'C:\WinBoard\Crafty 23.2 PS' -autoKibitz -smpCores 4 -keepAlive 5

Under Xboard (with a Linux executable of an engine) is the command line similar ? Would someone like to give theirs as an example for me to follow?

Here is what I use:

Code: Select all
nice xboard -tc 1:0 -inc 1 -mps 40 -xexit -xdebug -xponder -fcp ./crafty -fd /home/volker/Schach/engines/crafty -scp ./plisk -sd /home/volker/Schach/engines/plisk -size Mediocre -highlight -drag -legal -timeDelay -1 -coords -autoflag -reuse -reuse2 -sgf /home/volker/Schach/pgn/tests_and_tournaments/crafty/skill20.log.23.3.pgn -thinking -mg 1 -buttons -testClaims false -pgnExtendedInfo true -xautoraise -checkMates true -materialDraws true -trivialDraws true -adjudicateLossThreshold -80000 -repeatsToDraw 6 -polyglotDir /home/volker/Schach/polyglot -usePolyglotBook true -adjudicateDrawMoves 150 -ruleMoves 51

You don't have to take everything but I think you will get the main points. The "size" option is important otherwise the board will exceed your screen possibly. Please notice that I don't type all that stuff all the time but use a script for it. I only change the engine name. IIRC you are not afraid of the command line. So after reading a good tutorial about Linux scripting you can write something yourself.

Thanks for that. Indeed I'm not afraid of the command line, lots of experience in the old days with DOS and OS/2... and I see the use of relative paths there too in your example. I think I can handle this :)

Thanks to Miguel Ballicora, who helped me tremendously in getting his Gaviota engine running under Linux 10.04 x64. On that machine, Xboard 4.4.2 was installed via the Ubuntu repository. Works perfectly.
