Here is the URL to my 5 round Swiss that featured 44 of the latest versions of
all winboard engines (THAT I HAD ACCESSS TO!!). I know Swiss system pairings are
pretty lame but in the U.S they rule. All details are on the web page.

Interesting tournament with some surprising results. Comet and GNUChess4 are coming out in a way I didn't expect. Thanks for your effort.
BTW: I think your web page is designed very well. Reduced to the information, nothing of this java, javascript, gif, wav, asp stuff I'm forced to visit so often.

I am afraid that 5 rounds are too less to get some reliable results in view of the large list of participants.

Hello James,
Thanks for your effort and the interesting results. I'm happy to see that you used seeding for the first round. That makes results more reliable.
I think the freak results (e.g. that of Comet) can be partly attributed to the rather short time control and the low number of rounds.
Best regards,
Gabor

Well, I only planned on 5 rounds from the begining and with Crafty starting slow (draw in the 1st round) and coming back to beat 4-0 Gromit for 1st place in the last round seemed a fitting end for the tournament to me. Not to mention that some of the games played by the bottom of the field being almost too painfull to watch!. I do agree that 5 games is not enough to fully judge a programs strength as anything can and will happen in a few games but, looking at the ratings that were assigned before the tournament and how they finished I was very much pleased with how things went. There were very few major upsets, Comet, Crux and Gnuchess_414 played below their expected output but in any tournament computers and humans will do that sometimes.
I will run another one of these with a smaller field and longer time controls.

Well as many have pointed out, here and in CCC, you need a minimum of 6 rounds to handle 44 engines..Also, while the result might be fitting for Crafty, some like Comet i suspect will do quite respectably if you had one more round..
Comet in my view was just unlucky to lose to Inmnichess and bringer I think, both knocking on the door towards the elite group..Comet would probably win the next game if there was one and end up in a respectable position..

True..

That might be better..
