With the new WinBoard 4.0.4 and GNUChess 5,
the program doesn't use the opening book.
(I did not change default settings in any way.)
Any solutions?
Thanks,

Make sure that the opening book file (book.dat) is in the same directory as the exe file is and then the book should work.... after 1.e2-e4. I've tried it again andWith the new WinBoard 4.0.4 and GNUChess 5,

the book responded i.e. after 1.Nf3, 1.d4 and -
with some waiting time - after 1.c4, but it starts
to calculate after 1.e4. A little hole in the
repertoire?
To have the opening book file (book.dat) in the same directory as the exe file does not solve the problem after 1.e2-e4. I present another solution. After starting the WinBoard 4.0.4 with GnuChess5 choose "Reset game" and then all is working properly.Make sure that the opening book file (book.dat) is in the same directory as the exe file is and then the book should work.... after 1.e2-e4.
