Is there a crafty.rc file for version 17 Crafty? I don't see it in the download
and I can find no reference to it in the FAQ and READ ME files. Am I missing
something? How does Wcrafty know to use the book or how much hash, etc...

Thanks in advance

There isn't one that you can download, it's something you could put together yourself. Goto Frank's download page and get a copy of his config.zip file for an example of Crafty.rc.
Crafty will use it's books automatically when they are in the directory with Crafty. It has a default hashtable setting, but if you want something else you need to specify what you want. This is what's in my very basic crafty.rc file, note that I use very little hashtable size at all, some people use 32mb hash, if you have the memory on your computer, then go for it, but you'll need a whole lot more memory than 32mb to be able to specify 32mb hastable on your programs because Windows itself use an awfull lot of memory itself.
my rc file:
log=off
egtb
hash=6m
hashp=2m
exit
but don't go by mine, also see Frank's, taylor something for YOUR needs.

You don't actually need to have a crafty.rc file, Crafty will work ok without it, it's only to be used for things that you would be wanting to enter into Crafty everytime you used it if you didn't have Winboard. Also, don't use "exit" like at the end of my crafty.rc, that's something very old that's no longer needed and _I_ have failed to remove yet, sorry.

Thanks Pete.
I've been running Crafty17 against another program and wondered why it was behind so early in the game. It usually came back though indicating it had a superior endgame. I saw I was missing the Rc file and checked Bob Hyatt's site and assumed the reference to a crafty.rc file was outdated since the date of the new version was more current than the FAQ. Thanks again for clearing this up.
