Hello everyone,
I am newbee around here, and my first impression of this place is simply facinating. a great place for all the great chess and its related programmers. First of all i want to thank all of you for your great effort.
Now my question(s), Crafty is probably the strongest freeware chess proram available, and without doubt this is the program that can give all the commercial programs a hard time. But unfortunately its pace of improving is relatively slow comparing to other programs, though upgrades are available almost 12 months a year. I am not complaining, i mean to say that it is possible to make crafty as strong as commercial chess programs. I dont know what you people think but i have some of my own thoughts.......
1) give crafty a permanent interface. i know many people use winboard (great thing) but i believe a permanent interface can give crafty a reason to improve. If you look at all the commercial chess programs you will see that they have good interface (windows, dos) and more or less the performance of the programs increases along with the interface...... i am not saying that an interface increases the performance...... but i am saying that it acts like a reason to improve.
2)How about a more details "officail" website for crafty? (i dont know if there is any). configuring a crafty is quiet hard for someone who is new in computer chess. because the main theme of freeware (chess) programs is that others get satisfaction from it without paying.......so might as well make it easier for them to use ;-).
3) last not least is an active forum like this ........i wanna thank whoever is the main guy behind this good thing (probably frank).

I hope you understand that i mean no disrespect to anyone, its just my ideas to make my and many peoples fav. chess program (crafty) better.
thanks and with all great wishes,
pavel

ps, can someone tell me how does the bok.lrn and position.lrn of crafty works?
i am really interested to know....and does it make a diff. in the performance of a program? I would really appreciate feedbacks :))

I love the Winboard interface. Most commercial programs have horrible interfaces. The chessmaster interface makes me want to puke. Besides which, it isn't going to happen (fortunately) since Dr. Hyatt is not interested in fooling around with that portion.
There is both an official ftp site for Crafty (the UAB server) but also an email list server and several unofficial help sites of various kinds.

Get the documents and source code from the UAB site. It is not a one sentence answer.
