problem in running Colchess

(This problem has been discussed in this forum before).
I can't get colchess to run. I have:
(a) studied every posting in this forum and its archive on colchess
(b) studied Frank Q's configurations
(c) edited my autoexec.bat file (many times!) and rebooting
(d) tried many ways of writing the tag in win.ini (including not renaming anything).
(e) read the author's readme file and went to Dann's and author's webpages 4 to 5 times in 1 day.
(e) used hypnosis and thought about it in my sleep over 2 nights.
I may be wrong, but it seems that some PC systems cannot run colchess properly.
I am using a PII/350Hz/64 Mb ram system on windows 98. Even though colchess does not run, each time I tried to shutdown the PC, windows prompt me that chess.exe (which is colchess') is still running and must be shut down. I can only ctrl-alt-delete to shut down the invisible run(s) of chess.exe.
The other 46 winboard programs in my collection works ok.

I have had similar problems. I solved them by recompiling the sources.
There is a free compiler at Borland's website. If you would like to
have the .exe I've made please let me know. Please notice that this
version will not run as fast as the version made by Dann C and it's
_without_ any warranty.

I can't get colchess to run. I have:
It still confuses me how many people have these problems seeing as I have a similar system to you and it works fine.
It may be the .exe you have - several people have said that they couldn't get Dann's optimised version to run. Do you have his version or the version from my webpage?
Cheers,
Colin

Hi Colin
The one I tried and failed is the one at your website.
The executable is dated 22/2 2.38am (326kb).
But it is very strange. I click on the executable out of curiosity and the popup says :
"This is the unofficial version modified by Dann Corbit"
(I had just d/loaded the file from your site again to make double sure. The executable really says that).

About 8 MB. Attention: a debugger is _not_ included! Also it is a commandline tool and you have to register (=answering a few dozens questions) to Borland before download.

The problem might be to due with buffering. There was a bug with buffering in Xboard connections which happened on some platforms, but I've fixed it ready for v6.0 (due out Saturday 4th). I doubt that's the case for the Windows version though.

Yeah, that's just a default for the windows version. The latest version says;
"ColChess Version 6.0. Windows version, possibly modified by Dann Corbit"
Wait for v6.0 and see if it works any better.
Cheers,
Colin
