Arasan as default for PGN's ??

Postby chessfun » 06 Mar 2000, 07:47

Geschrieben von:/Posted by: chessfun at 06 March 2000 07:47:30:

After installing arasan53 it defaulted itself as the default pgn
viewer. Prior to this I had wordpad as my default which I was happy
with. I check association file types but apparently arasan defaults
itself as "pgnfile" which is unlisted as a type so I can't remove it
even if I uninstall arasan which I tried.
I can't create a new association for "pgn" since it then says file type
"pgnfile" already associated, but I can't remove it since it isn't there.
Anyone who can help me get back to my default wordpad for PGN files?.
Thanks.

Sad to say, but on this comp I am running win98. This was already
installed when I got this computer and no win98 discs came with it.
So I wouldn't be able to tick the box to uninstall then re-install.
On my other comp I have win 95 and do have the discs but don't want
to install that over win98.
I will download a wordpad type prog I have seen others around with
more features anyway and try that.
Seems strange to me though that the program installs itself as the
default and then there is no way to stop it. Maybe re-booting I will
try that later also.
Thanks.

Try to open pgn-files with Wordpad and see if the default changes. That is, open wordpad and load a pgn-file and resave it. If I were to recommend another option try the program Chesspad.

Hi,
Have you tried this:
Try to open a pgn file by double clicking on it. Now when you are prompted for an associated program, choose Wordpad, and tick the small square below the list to tell Win98 always to use this program for this type of file.
Best regards,
Gabor

If Arasan is the default viewer after installation it won't give you the option of using wordpad or winboard. You can only choose if there's no standard program for .pgn files.

Thanks I will try this chesspad.
I had already tried opening files in wordpad and then saving it
again but the default didn't change. Though I still haven't tried
re-booting that's the trouble with "Chess" can't stop the games for
things like a re-boot LOL.
Thanks.

Try this:

3) Find pgn (or portable game notation) type.
4) Edit the viewer for pgn.
5) Done.

No...sadly not. This was the first thing I tried.
But slightly different so at least I learned something new.
I tried.
1) Click on my computer
2) Click on view
3) click on folder options
same thing but no pgn exists as a type either way.
If I left click on a PGN and look at properties
the file is a pgnfile not a pgn. And this pgnfile
type isn't listed as a type.
The pgn type no longer exists, pgn defaults to
arasan as pgnfile which is unlisted as a file
type. Re-booting didn't work either...next try
is another txt editor.
Thanks.

Hmmm..... In my system there's no pgn type either, so I tried to create a viewer for it. But Windoes kindly told that pgnfile already exists with the extension .pgn. Puzzled I looked through the different extensions and discovered that pgn is listed as portable game notation further down, which is changeable. If you use Windows98 it must be there somewhere. So my advise is: Try to create a viewer for .pgn extensions as a new type. If windows complain you could discover what to change.
Best wishes...

I don't recommend playing with the registry but this is a common problem and sometimes it is useful to know what's going on...
Windows saves file associations in the registry under the key HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT. Running "regedit" (e.g. from Start->Run) displays the registry content as a tree where HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT is the first node. Double-clicking on it will expand the node and show a sequence of keys. There is a key for each known extension, you will likely find .a, .ai, .aif and so on at the beginning of the list. The only important thing to figure is that an extension, such as .png, is *not* directly associated to a program. This happens because there may be multiple extensions that represents the same file type (e.g. .jpg/.jpeg or .htm/.html). So a file extension is associated to a file type, for example if you (single-)click on ".avi" you will notice on the right that the default value is "AVIFile". So what program is used to play an AVI? That's written in another key named exactly "AVIFile", which can be found after all the many keys that name known extensions (in fact keys are alphabetically ordered, that's why the keys starting with "." come first).
So here's my guess: if you click on ".pgn" you will find it associated to a type "pgnfile" (or whatever) that is associated to Arasan, double-click on the "(Default)" item to edit it, write down the current value and replace it with "wrifile" that is usually associated with WordPad (if you want to know for sure then the correct association can be found by clicking on the ".wri" key). If that doesn't solve the problem repeat these last steps to restore the previous value.
Note: if you are unsure then *don't do it* as messing with the registry can make your computer unusable.

Thank you Mogens !!
I installed chesspad which then overwrote the pgnfile with
Portable Game Notation which was then listed.
I changed it's association to wordpad but it wouldn't run.
So I then deleted the association went back and clicked on
pgn file and created a new association back to wordpad which
now I am happy to say runs my pgn files again. !!
Thanks

First, DO NOT attempt to modify your registry unless you know exactly what
you are doing. You have no safety net.
But there is a nice work-around. You can send your pgn files to your
favorite viewer Wordpad or Winboard. (When you right-click on a file)
Go to Start Run In the box type " sendto " (no quotes) On screen you then
have a small window. You can then copy in this windows a Wordpad link and/or
Winboard startup icon to alternatively view or edit your pgn files or
replay the games with Winboard.
Hope this helps,
