Hello everebody:
Perhaps some people won't apreciate my personal point of view.
The matter is I think that Crafty, LGoliath, Annmon, Comet and Zchess are
some wonders of free chess programming.
Why? They are strong Engines with many options for make easy the interaction with the most known enviroments: Winboard, ChessBase, Millenium, Chess Vision and so on.
The Winboard Engines programmers have spent a lot of time, excuse me, I want to say years!, for creating these small great wonders.
I've tested all this engines under the mention enviroments and the results have been pretty satisfactory.
I have played many times with these engines. I enjoy so much when the engines choose unexpected moves that I had never considered during a game. Really fantastic when I can beat them (Rarely I am able to do it).
Yes, the comercial engines are very strong, but the other matter is that we have available these free engines over the Internet.
I hope that the following humble request doesn't get angry to the others Engines Programming Masters: I would like to know if they are considering in making compatible theirs engines with the mentioned enviroments (ChessBase, Millenium, Chess Vision).
For example, I think SoS is a very strong engine, but its restricted options doesn't allow me to do many actions like the mentioned engines. Neither it is compatible with the mentioned enviroments.
Finally, Winboard is the other wonder. Today we have free volunteers like Frank K., Dan C., R. Hyatt, Michael B, etc... that spent a lot of time, keeping us updated.
I am proud to belong to this Virtual Community that discusses and debates about these wonders of programming every day, every time.
Good lucky and congratulations for the all Winbord Engines Programmers and the other "Winboarders".
Best Regards, Bryan Kert.

What is needed is that everone make their interfaces able to use Winboard engines, it's not the programmer's responsibility to make their engines compatible with those interfaces, they allready interface with Winboard.
There are some versions of some of those engines compiled as Chessbase engines, see their site for downloads, also Bringer and Inmichess have Chessbase .eng files included with their download packages.
You're right, Crafty, LGoliath, Annmon, Comet and Zchess are all great programs.
Another good Winboard engine is The Crazy Bishop if you find time to try it. Great program, Gromit too.

Thanks for your post Bryan! I really liked reading it. And agree totally
with you. Myself, I'm a more or less retired /not due to age!/ tournament-
player with about ELO 2270. And I must say that my chessinterest has
blossomed once more, cause I can play these amazingly strong free programs
and the commercial ones, whenever I have time. The service provided by
Frank Q (and others) concerning WB.ini and CB.ini has ment a great deal to me.
Just like the pricefall on very strong commercial programs. Together with
my 750Mb openingbook I can really face a wall of knowledge in every game.
And the future to come is even more interesting...
Thanks

Hmm, no worry - this Steinlaus is not so dangerous and maybe even more
common than you think... Must confess - I have this chronic disease, called
chess-flue. This one is connected with "zwang". I just *have* to play through
chessgames, must play chess. But it makes me happy! At the moment by looking
at Kasparovs games in Linares! How this man creates *activity*! This is a
key-word to remember. He sacs a pawn just to get his beloved pair of bishops.
No visible attack - but then he makes the bishops come to life and cut through
the position. Or this manoeuvre, as black in Sicilian, with the Queen to h4!
Oh, I must now switch over to Linares...

Yes I can understand :-)
I will in the evening load the last games in the evening. In the last 3 days I have not time for my webpage and games. Linares is a good tournament and you can find games with good comments from GMs (example: Ajedrez de Estillo see my News Ticker). Roberto is one of the Webmasters from the page in Argentina and wrote me these for a few days. I load the games and replay a lot of games from Linares 2000. An fantastic service that I can found in the internet games with comments from GMs !
My dream is it to got a GM for a match WinBoard Forum or Gambit-Soft Forum against a GM ! I toil in the internet and I think one day I have a GM for this action :-)
A match GM against Forum with amateur programs and without professional programs is my dream at the moment ! We have enough games from professional programs against GMs !
Regards
Frank
