Hello,
Today start the Averno time: 10 March - 20 March
All people who post in this forum have ten days for playing two 60 min games against Averno.
(First with white and second with black)
Games must be serious so no takebacks, no help.....
Please post games in this forum and send me games in pgn because I will compile
game in one file and send it to Frank for his web page (If Frank want of course ).
I think than EVERYBODY can play 2 games in 10 days.
Does it have to be G/60 or can we play slower?
I am terrified of computers at G/60.
Hello Dann,
Why are you terrified at G/60 ?
Because I have even less of a chance. A long time ago I did well against computers at many time controls (though I never play blitz). Computers caught up and passed me by. I used to run road races also. But when I thought I no longer had a chance to win, I stopped. It is similar with me in chess. I must feel I have a chance to win. It can be a very slim chance, but it must exist in my mind or I won't even try.
For humans, right now, time is an advantage. The slower the better. Look how Mike Valvo clubbed Deep Thought at correspondence time controls. Look how Kasparov's recent internet match ran scared from Junior at G/60. The longer we can think, the better. That's because (for computers) chess is an exponential process. At some point, they "hit the wall" to use a running metaphor. For humans, we don't continue searching down pathways that lead to bad ideas. So when we have more time, we can come up with much better ideas while computers cannot. To convince yourself of this effect, try ten matches at several time controls, starting from game in ten seconds, and doubling the time allowed at each step. You will find that the more time you have the better you do.
I like to play 40/2 against any opponent -- computer or human. Sometimes, it ends up as G/60 because I play faster than I should. But I simply don't like fast chess and I won't play it against a computer because they are already better than I am, and I need every advantage I can get.
