I've spent a fair amount of time having Crafty do analysis of positions posted at CCC lately, so I started trying it out from Winboard and using different Winboard engines instead of doing it all within Crafty's console. This is what I found:
These Winboard engines can do analysis mode in Winboard, the first group I found out by trying, the second group are listed as being able to on Frank & Volker's Winboard pages, but I have not tried this feature on those programs.
These I've tried:
Crafty, TCB, Phalanx, LilGoliath, InmiChess!, Bringer.
These are listed as doing analysis:
Fortress, Exchess, Freyr, Gromit 3.00, Monik, Skaki, SOS, SSEchess.
I'm surprised that there are that many.
A side note, some of these programs can generate their own log file, that will contain the analysis, but for those that cannot, you can add "/debug" after Winboard's command line, ei. I now have this:
D:\winboard\winboard.exe /debug
And winboard will generate a debug file called "winboard.dedug" that will contain the analysis. This will be overwritten with each game, so you'll want to rename it if you want to save it.
