Challenger Test
Beta Testing Games of Zchess1.51b, Zephyr0.2
and LittleGoliath2000V2.6b. against Old, Unusual and Non Winboard Chess
Programs.

Objetive: To test these Beta Wimboard
Engines against the Non Winboard Chess Programs, in order to establish
their game level skills with these programs. The reason is the other Testers
do a lot of games between Winboard Engines and I want to give unpublished
games of non usual confrontations between the above Beta Winboard Engines
and these  Non Winboard programs.

First Challenger: Chess
Master 3000.

About the Program: Chess Master
3000 was the first Chess Master Version under Windows. This Version is
from 1991! Chess Master 3000 was a little stronger than the previous version:
Chess Master 2100 under Ms-Dos. Thie version had its own chess engine,
not The King engine.

Game Style: This Chess Master 3000
version has a game style extremely solid that could sometimes remember
the Jose Raul Capablanca's game style. On the other hand, their weaknesses
are, first, its brute force algorithm does not allow to "see" very deep
tactical lines, and, second, several bugs in his positional game does not
allow it to make effective decisions in some positions of high strategic
contents . This sometimes turns it into a very weak position player. It
is possible to be said that its end game is quite acceptable. In summary,
a pretty strong Program for the 1991 year.

Brief Analysis

Chess Master 3000 was stronger than Zchess1.51b.
Probably causes:

1)  Zchess1.51b played both the opening
and the middle game very fast. I suppose Zchess1.51b cuts the analysis
tree in tactical variation as soon as it "thinks" its position is better.
However, I think it doesn't deepen enough in the tactical  forced
variations.

2)  Zchess1.51b only developed its
analysis until 8 to 9 plies during the opening or the middle game. I suppose,
this missed situation occurs for the above reason.

3) Zchess1.51b sometimes selected horrible
moves that was not according with its game strength. I don't know really
why it selected these horrible moves. I think it is a search algorithm
bug that doesn't deepen appropriately in the resulting positions of the
variants, or, communication problems under Fritz 5.32

4)  Chess Master 3000 showed an adecuated
game level against  Zchess1.51b. It only kept its same level during
the all games, the same strengths and weaknesses of its game style.

Interesting results..
I would sugguest you try non-commerical nonwinboard programs some of which I believe are supposed to be strong, eg Goldbar- A dutch program?? vers some of the better winboard programs such as Crafty

I would try them myself, but I only have one computer..

Yes, you are right. But I am testing Zchess, LGoliath and Zephyr actually.
I am going to use Old Comercial Programs as much as Free Programs. The problem with Goldbar is that I do not speak Dutch. About Crafty, I cannot do it, because of my insufficient time.

Not problem. You can try it. Crafty may be a good Engine for testing.
