Your time controls are probably too fast, so Comet won't be at it's best. Try a few games at maybe 60 moves in 45 minutes. Also, you might consider bringing other programs in to test the 2 versions of Comet against, maybe a match between the 2 Comets, Crafty, TCB, Amy? Is Amy in the same area of strength?

Your probe is probably too small. In my tests, the B.20 could beat the B.18, the B.11 and another opponent, usually giving Comet a tough time.
Also in the tests done by chessbase, the B.20 is at least not worse than the B.18.

Uli, can I get the Dos version of Comet to generate a log file containing the search results that it makes? I can get Comet to read an epd position just fine, and it's even not much trouble editting a batch file to have Comet run several epd positions, but I've never figured out a way to get it to show me a log of it's search results. Is that not posible? If not, it would be a nice feature.
Thanks
Pete

Probably..

Are you talking abotu Crafty? CometB20 just beat Crafty1710 1.5-0.5 for a 30 min game..Actually, CometB20 should have won both, but Crafty just escaped in the end game of the second one..
I'll continue with a sieres of 2 game matches at 30 mins control with Phalanx,SOS,Goliath, Gormit,Anmon and maybe Fran or amy..Let's see if Comet B20 can get better than a 50% result..

According to my tests I guess the new version is stronger.

Thanks for info and testing, Volker. Your result seems quite close to the match results which I have obtained.

When that message pops up, just hit enter, and it'll go away, and if you're running a match, it's not going to make you do that for every game, only for the first game, Comet is _not_ sending that info to Winboard with "telluser" on subsequent games. So it's not _really_ going to interfere with matches and tournaments if that's a concern.
