Pity..Sos's book is so small, and the moves in them are quite rare, such that >>most other engines are also out of book quickly..Unfortunately, so is SOS!
But does SOS have learning? I hope so, otherwise, others with learning will >>quickly learn how to beat SOS's limited book..
Book size can be very deceiving ; I think the SOS book suits its style >extremely well and especially the white part is very complete .
Being out of book early is no problem if you have a position your engine >understands well it seems to me .
As book lines are short also learning is not such a big problem as position >learning is very primitive so far .
As you mentioned it happens quite often that the opponent is out of book even >earlier .
And then you have engine-engine and it seems sos does well

It is? I'll drag a few games out and see..But my impression that it isnt so..
Probably, but without learning, you have to re -search the same position over and over again..
Best of course, would be if the engine could automatically add moves into the book, besides learning merely to avoid known bad book moves in them as in Crafty and the rest..
Colchess does this I belive..Allowing it to "learn" from others..
I'm not so sure..I already have a few games, where Goliath vers Sos started with the same position quite a few times..I'll check to see if Goliath is beginning to gain a advantage from these similar games..
I always thought the idea was to keep the opponent out of book, while you remain in book, but unfortunately, more often then not a Sos "book move" at say move 4 or 5, throws both out of book!
Yes..Very impressive..I just wish a new version of SOS be released in it's winboard edition soon...Sos is still on top for now..But in a few months time, newer versions will start to surpass it..
