Extra, Extra! Read all about it:
C.A.P. FAQ: ftp://38.168.214.175/pub/Chess%20Analys ... %20FAQ.htm
CAP is a coordinated effort to analyze chess positions using standard EPD chess notation (a subset of the PGN standard).
There are a large number of current projects running. We have completed several also. We have contributors from all over the world with equipment ranging from P75's to supercomputers.
The original opening experiment (project ECO) was the first experiment and was completed over a year ago (IIRC).
We have completely analyzed a very large number of Orangutan games, Stonewall games, and we are currently crunching a huge collection of Scotch games.
We analyzed test suites. We analyzed popular moves. Currently, any position that has been played at least ten times in a tournament game has been analyzed.
The basic standard is that we apply 12 minutes equivalent of Pentium II 300 MHz CPU time to each position. However, we have analyzed 60 million positions at fast time control.
Several chess corporations are helping out, along with some corporations not involved in chess. Pace University in New York gave us free use of a Sun Server for quite a while. We also have "secret" contributors.
