So this is the 57th winboard engine?? Welcome..At this rate, we will be crossing the 100 mark soon..
Hmm, I have only (!) 56 on my page. I wonder if I'm missing one. I could get to 57 by counting GNU Chess 4.0 and 5.0 separately, though. Actually GNU Chess 3.1+ should still work, so you could count that too and get 58....
We should start a countdown to 100.
Are we counting all the freely available ones only or also the privateware --
and what about the commercial ones?
Which brings up the second question:
When are the rest of the commercial vendors going to collect their senses and >create Winboard versions of their engines?
Will the commercial vendors ever offer an interface with equal functionality to >Winboard? That interface has been well defined for years. What's taking them >so long to wake up and smell the coffee? I'm sure it's costing them a mint.
Privateware _and_ comercialware don't count for much. Niether one exists if you ask me.
That's not going to happen IMO.
Another thing that won't happen. After all, in reality, Winboard is very passive. It does allows of things, but it does very little, it's just allowing everything to happen (the way I see it).
The killer Winboard replacement would be something that a company packaged in with their regular program and interface, but instead of their regular interface, this would do nothing else but run Winboard engines, and it could have a good looking gui, all of Winboard's features, _and_ tournament playing ability (not just matches), and all this could be put into a package that wasn't very memory hungry. And this could be done without having to generate additional .init or .ini files, Winboard doesn't need them.
Don't expect it to happen. As I recall, James Swafford was working on a Winboard like program, but he might have stopped working on it for all I know. See The Galahad Project link.
