Hallo,
when I try to start the Crafty1-binary the engine is started normally ; but when I make a move crafty won't answer but instead give the following message and die :
CRAFTY1 verursachte einen Fehler durch eine ungültige Seite

I checked my settings and also redownloaded the binary ; the error seems to be 100 % reproducable.
It is no major problem for me as there was no major change to 17.8 anyway ; just curious if it is a thing only happening here .
My computer is a PIII500 running Win98SR2 .
greetings.

Hallo ,
who can help ?
First crafty1 ( from Corbit's site ) itself ( in text mode ) works very well here ; also all commands out of Crafty.rc are used and well understood ( what I obviously should have tested before ).
Also the relevant section in winboard.ini is so simple that I can't think of a mistake there
\"Crafty1\" /fd=c:\\crafty
If this was the case the program wouldn't start anyway .
So it can't be the settings it seems .
I also tried the crafty1 (17.08-Version ) ; won't work ; then tried wcrafty17.6 from the official site which won't work either :-( . Every time the same mistake ( see other post ) .
The other winboard programs work as usual and without problems.
So for me it is suddenly no minor problem anymore :-)) .
Has anyone ever experienced a similar problem or does anyone have an idea what is going on here ?
Thanks to everyone who has a helpful idea .
greetings.

Have you remembered to download the new books due to the change in bookformat from 16.xx to 17.xx? Otherwise post your Crafty.rc for closer inspection.

I didn't have any problem with Dann's new download, I've been using it since yesterday to analyze games, and today since you mentioned having trouble, I tried it in Winboard too. I don't see a problem.
I don't know if it's worth mentioning, but when I download Crafty, whether it's from Dann's site or Dr. Hyatt's site, I always save it as "crafty.exe" and not whatever it's called on the ftp site, this saves me the trouble of changing anything on my computer when I switch to the new version.
So switching to new versions is never really noticed for me.

thanks for the tips . It is no problem of Dann's version ; it seems to be a problem with all crafties ( wcrafty17.6 , crafty 1 ( 17.08 + 17.09 ) on this ( fine new ) computer.
I should also add that it works very well for me on my other one ( which I tried this afternoon ) .

My problem is that I see no point to start for finding the error .
It is obviously no error in my Crafty.rc as I also tested it after I moved it away with exactly the same result ( also it wouldn't work nicely in text mode then )
I use the new books ( else I would get an error message in crafty-logfiles anyway )
It is also no error in winboard.ini ( verified by starting it directly with C:\Programme\winboard -fcp Crafty1 -fd c:\crafty )
There is absolutely nothing odd in the crafty-logfiles as far as I can understand it ( it simply silently dies , after it got and understood the 1st move )
There is nothing strange in the winboard-debug File ( only the well-known first engine died unexpectedly ) .
So it is seems to me it is something strange only happening on this computer ; but this is also strange as I have played some 100 games with various winboard progs on it without problems ; also every other application works fine .
Well ; bad chances for crafty on my computer it seems ; if noone else has the same problems bad chance to get it fixed .
Thanks for your tips ; and if anyone else has an idea what I could do I would thank you very much ( I might try the crafty-mailinglist on Monday ?! )

Hi Pete,
I only myself tonight set up winboard and 25 engines to my
second PC.
I downloaded two of Dans compiles. Crafty 17.09 and Phalanxf.
Phalanx f I could not get to work at all, so ended up using the
authors original compile.
I have little winboard experience only before having run GNU Crafty
and Comet.
But I went to Franks http://amateurschach.in-trier.de/schach ... load-q.htm and downloaded his winboard config.zip and it helped greatly.
Note: If you want to keep your original winboard.ini to back it up.
I just changed the name of my initial directories to his...programmes
and then changed the name of the actual file in the winboard.ini
Example:
First program
\"Crafty_1708\" /fd=c:\\Programme\\Winboard\\Crafty
Second program
\"Crafty_1708\" /sd=c:\\Programme\\Winboard\\Crafty
From "Crafty_1709\" to "Crafty1\"
I did this with about 25 engines and as I said only one failure was
Phalanx, phalanxf in this case.
BTW anyone else reading this, the Nimzo winboard program is this
free ?? where can it be obtained since I don't not see it at Nimzo's
homepage either for sale or free.
Hope some of this may help.
Thanks.

Same here. I managed to use Phalanxf for a couple of weeks before it keeled over.
If you want to use the english/US term insterad of the german one for the folder containing programs try
\"Crafty_1709\" /fd=\"c:\\Program Files\\Winboard\\Crafty\"
You just have to remember the \" at each end of dirpath.
No, unfortunately it's not free.
Hopefully.
Best wishes...

Thanks for the help .
It turned out that the book file was somehow corrupted ; this wasn't noted by crafty when it was started , and not if having to answer a first move in text mode ( that's why it could play in text mode with black ) , but only when it got a "go" or a "move" right from the start .

Nice to hear :-)
I rename all exe files. I think it is better when I can see which programs play an engine - engine match in the WinBoard status line !
I can see
Crafty1 - Engine
For Crafty and Gromit !
Now I can see
Crafty_1709 - Gromit_220 !
This is better for me :-)
For the Corbit version the parameter -o-
Works fine !
o= Oscar
not Zero :-)
See my detail page to Phalanx, I have for all engines a detail page, but the pages are in german !
Mogens wrote about Nimzo, yes not free !
The "WinBoard Engine" is included in the MCSystem 2000 packet !
The detail page for Nimzo stand in the Phase X project pages !
25 engines ?
A lot of work !

This is smart !! I will also follow this suggestion.

I'm sorry....but where does this -o- go in the comand line?

Read it as best I could, but saw no reference to the -o-.

Took me about 3 hours. Now I must try to get them all to work
with F6 interface also. I have your init.zip so wish me luck !!.
Thanks.

Yes, I think it`s better !
And better for the Chess-Base GUIs !
You can see in the engine menue the version :-)
Here I rename in ...
c:\Chess\CBase\Engines\WB_AnMon_506.eng
c:\Chess\CBase\Engines\WB_AnMon_506\WB_AnMon_506.exe
c:\Chess\CBase\Engines\WB_AnMon_506\WB_AnMon_506.init
c:\Chess\CBase\Engines\WB_AnMon_506\AnMon.ini
And when I play a tournament under Fritz 6a I look in the table to WB_x and I am happy when the WB_x engines stand in the list in a good position !
Sorry, you have right, I delete the message on the day who the version 22 from Dusan Dobes is available !
\"Phalanx_22_Co -t32768 -r900 -o-\" /fd=c:\\Chess\\WinBoard\\Phalanx
\"Phalanx_22_Co -t32768 -r900 -o-\" /sd=c:\\Chess\\WinBoard\\Phalanx
In my WinBoard.ini !
I play without the learn option -l+
Try the parameter -o- !
A user wrote these in the WinBoard forum. I can not play with the Corbit tweaked version 22 without -o- !
I edit the files for all "WinBoard Engines", but you can not play under Chess-Base GUIs with all programs.
Example: SOS, LambChop !
The new Dragon 3.11-2 can play under Chess-Base GUIs, but a lot of user have problems with Dragon 3.11-2 ! I can not see the problems !

Hi,
This is smart !! I will also follow this suggestion.
Regards
Frank

This works for my Phalanxf version.....excellent TY :-)

I did notice today a few of them would not run.
Shame that SoS is a good little blitz program against me at least,
very aggressive......I like it a lot.
Thanks.
